Disco and glam rock were despised by many bands that played the legendary New York punk bar CBGB’s in the ’70s. To Blondie, that just didn’t make any sense. Drummer Clem Burke says, “Saturday Night Fever’s sort of a punk-rock story, really, with disco music.” Yet Blondie became a hit in the Big Apple’s punk scene. But in 1976, “Oh yeah, there was a backlash,” he says. “But we were never about having tunnel vision in what we did. New York City’s a melting pot of many different sounds and cultural things.” Everything Blondie touched turned to gold then platinum.
