Nickelback not paid a nickel to play

Posted by skye.sylvain, in category Artists, Charity, Concerts, Sports, January 1, 2012 3:04 pm

Nickelback didn’t earn a penny for headlining the halftime show at the Thanksgiving Day game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers. Some thought Nickelback played for free because of its charitable relationship with The United Way (the band donated a quarter for every person who pledged to become a volunteer reader, tutor or mentor). Others thought Nickelback wasn’t getting paid because of a Michigan student’s petition to replace the group with an act that’s not “awful.”  But the real reason Nickelback didn’t get paid? Musical acts simply don’t get paid for performing at major sporting events. Even those that play the Super Bowl typically don’t receive a cheque – most recently the Black Eyed Peas at the big game in Dallas. What would you have to do as a band to have a conversation with a third of the continent?

Nickelback divides

Posted by skye.sylvain, in category Artists, Sports, December 17, 2011 9:04 am

An online poll conducted proves just how divisive Canadian rock band Nickelback is. In November, a Detroit Lions fan fired up an online petition to replace Nickelback as the halftime show for the Lions’ Thanksgiving Day game against the Green Bay Packers – even though the NFL hadn’t yet confirmed Nickelback as the performer.  In his petition the student wrote, “This game is nationally televised; do we really want the rest of the U.S. to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?! Does anyone even like Nickelback? Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcohol and concessions?” Over 50 thousand people had signed the petition, and added comments like, “I’d rather drink bleach than listen to Nickelback and have them associated with Detroit,” and, “I’m from Alberta, home of Nickelback, and I would like to stop them from performing anywhere else. They have been giving Canadians and Albertans a bad name since they puked out that ‘How YouRremind Me’ thing way back when, and I think it is time they are stopped!”   What do you think of the band?
