Tonight is music’s biggest night, The Grammys but it’s a little smaller this year – organizers amalgamated and eliminated 31 categories, 78 gramophone-shaped trophies are being handed out. Adele, Bruno Mars, Foo Fighters all have 6 nominations each. Mumford & Sons have 4; Coldplay, Cee Loo Green, and Lady Gaga have 3 each. Katy Perry, Foster the People, Kings Of Leon, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arcade Fire and Lady Antebellum are all nominees.
Last year, Cee Lo Green put the F-word into the Grammy vocabulary. This year, Pink keeps the streak alive with F***in’ Perfect, up for pop solo performance.
Paul McCartney’s being honoured by MusiCares and is up for a Grammy with his Band on the Run reissue. He’ll perform. Ringo Starr is presenting an award.
I always wait for the moment when the Grammys honour those who have gone before us.
Shockingly, last night Whitney Houston died. This past year, we also lost Amy Winehouse, Thin Lizzy guitar hero Gary Moore, rap godfather Gil Scott-Heron, and soul man Dobie Gray (“Drift Away” with and without Uncle Kracker).
